Analyzing Changes in Students’ Media Writing Self-Perceptions During a Writing-Intensive Course

Regardless of academic discipline or future career responsibilities, college students are challenged to meet employers’ demand for strong communication skills. However, becoming an effective, professional writer is a struggle many students. Based upon concepts writing self-efficacy and apprehension, the Media Writing Self-Perception (MWSP) scale was administered undergraduate in writing-intensive agricultural communications course evaluate differences self-perceptions as semester progressed determine any relationships between MWSP scores on assignments. Statistically significant were found self-efficacy, elaborative/surface construct from beginning end. A positive correlation pretest posttest grades major assignments, supporting assertion that stronger related improved overall. Students also reflected their scores, which revealed themes illustrated variation preferred styles highlighted role assignments influencing self-perceptions. This study supports growing body literature indicates rigorous, diverse beneficial improving skills allowing time reflection helps student writers understand how they can improve.
